Syria conflict: Kerry and Hammond seek negotiations.

Syria conflict: Kerry and Hammond seek negotiations.

Mr Kerry is on a European tour which is expected to be dominated by the Syrian conflict.
After talks with his UK counterpart Philip Hammond on Saturday, he said they "agreed completely on the urgency of nations coming together in order to resolve this war that has gone on for much too long".
US Secretary of State John Kerry has called for a renewed diplomatic effort to end the conflict in Syria.
Just as importantly, perhaps, a series of defeats for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has made his position look more precarious than it has for years, possibly enough to shift the stalemate and bring the Syrian government to genuine negotiations.

Migrants are now diverting to Croatia, with authorities bracing for 20,000 arrivals in the next two weeks.
The pressure is on the Croatian government to mobilise mass transport now that it is becoming a major migrant thoroughfare towards northern Europe.Several hundred people were finally on their way to the Croatian capital Zagreb late Thursday after a chaotic day in which thousands of people were trapped for hours in the baking sun at a small rural train station at Tovarnik near the border, waiting for transport.Local women showed up with food, water and baby supplies, and there were emotional farewells as the train finally pulled away, with cries of "We love you!"rom the departing migrants. Croatian girls made heart signs with their hands and wiped away tears.

Australian leader Tony Abbott in Malcolm Turnbull defeats Liberal party leadership vote - live.

The Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has been unseated by cabinet minister Malcolm Turnbull - the man he ousted as leader of the Liberal Party in 2009.Mr Turnbull, a multi-millionaire, won a secret party vote by 54 to 44, meaning Australia will have a new prime minister. The 60-year-old resigned as the communications Minister ahead of the ballot.
In Australian politics, members of a political party can attempt to ambush a leader with a sudden request to “spill” – or declare vacant – the leadership. As in the UK, the prime minister is not directly elected by voters but is the leader of the party or coalition that can command a majority in the lower house of parliament.

Abbott had pleaded with his party colleagues not to repeat the mistakes of their Labor predecessors who, when in government, switched from Kevin Rudd to Julia Gillard in 2010 before returning Rudd to the prime ministership shortly before losing the 2013 election.
